Dr. Mukanga, is Senior Program Officer for Regulatory Affairs, Africa Systems, at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He has a combined 21 years of experience spanning Pharma, child survival and development, epidemic preparedness and response, clinical research and academia. David started his career working in regulatory affairs. He then spent several years in research and teaching at Makerere University before moving to the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) as its 1st Chief Executive Officer.

He spent seven years at AFENET helping build epidemic preparedness and response capacities across 20 African countries working with the WHO, US CDC, USAID, US Department of Defense and others. He joined the Bill and Melinda Gates in 2013 as Global Health Fellow, and worked on projects on pneumonia diagnostics and treatment, surveillance, and R&D for Ebola vaccines. In 2016, David joined the Regulatory Affairs team at the Gates Foundation as Senior Program Officer responsible for Africa regulatory systems strengthening. In this role, David supports the development of harmonized, transparent and predictable regulatory systems in Africa, as well regulatory preparedness of R&D in emergencies.

David serves on a number of boards and committees and is Africa regional editor for the DIA Global Forum. David received his PhD in International Health from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden.
